The D.U.F.F. (Designated Ugly Fat Friend)

The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by Kody Keplinger

Bianca is friends with Casey and Jessica. She considers them more beautiful, outgoing and less cynical than she herself is but they are all the best of friends. One evening while they are at a the high school nightclub, Wesley, the very attractive man-slut around school starts talking to her at the bar. He tells her she’s a DUFF (designated ugly fat friend) because her friends are beautiful. This irritates her but he wants one of her friends to notice him and he tells her that if her friends see him talking to her then one of them will go out with him. She kindly throws a Cherry Coke in his face and walks away.

So begins Bianca’s strange enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley, a relationship that she keeps secret from her friends, while trying to deal with the bad situation at home.

The Duff is written by 19-year-old debut author Kody Keplinger. I wasn’t sure what to expect from such a young author, but I was impressed. This is a book that I’ll recommend to the Sarah Dessen fans at my library.
