Linger

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

I think I actually liked Linger better than Shiver. It held my attention better and it seemed to flow better. The chapters are laid out a bit differently with all of one scene and chapter being told from different perspectives. Each perspective flows one right into the next, it was really interesting and also so natural to read.

Linger picks up right where Shiver leaves off. Sam is still human, Isabel is dealing with the death of her brother Jack and the new wolves are living in the woods. The book is told from Sam, Grace, Isabel and Cole’s, one of the new wolves, perspectives.

Now Sam must deal with living a human existence. He’s working at the bookstore and staying in Grace’s room at night. When Grace’s parents find them in bed together (with nothing except sleeping happening), Grace is grounded from seeing Sam.

Cole, one of the new wolves and a former rock star, is struggling to stay wolf. He rather kill himself than stay human. Unlike the other wolves, Cole can’t stay wolf, he’s constantly changing back and forth which is how he meets Isabel. He shows up in Isabel’s house one night naked as a jaybird.

One scene with Cole and his morphing between wolf and human involves his killing a deer that I found so difficult to read. The images in that scene were so strong that I had to try to distract myself from thinking about it later on.

I love Maggie Stiefvater’s book trailer for Shiver and she’s made another wonderful one for Linger.
