Owly

Owly Volume 1: The Way Home & The Bittersweet Summer
Owly Volume 2: Just A Little Blue
Owly Volume 3: Flying Lessons
Owly Volume 4: A Time to Be Brave

by Andy Runton

I love Owly. I’ve read the first four in the series. It had been sitting on our library shelves never getting checked out so I needed to read it to see if it was worth booktalking. I fell in love with this wordless graphic novel that’s so sweet. Fans of animal stories will love these books.

The books are all about friendship and caring for one another. Owly’s best friend is Wormy along with many other creatures in the woods. Through all of the stories, Owly demonstrates what compassion is all about, helping friends in need.

Though it’s wordless, I think younger readers may struggle with some of the thought balloons, even I had to go back a couple of panels to figure out what was going on. By the fourth book, it was fairly easy since I was more accustomed to the symbols. Middle grade readers will really enjoy these books.
