Finally
Published March 2010 by Scholastic Press. Review copy provided by publisher.
Rory has been waiting years to turn 12. Every time her mother tells her she’s not old enough it’s followed by “when you’re 12″ and then Rory adds it to her “12″ list. Several of the things on the list include get a cell phone, go to the mall with friends and without parents, wear makeup and attend a boy-girl party.
When Rory’s twelfth birthday finally arrives, she anticipates everything she’ll finally be able to do. Unfortunately, not everything goes as planned for Rory.
Fans of Wendy Mass’s book 11 Birthdays will be pleasantly surprised that Rory goes to the same school as Amanda and Leo. And Amanda and Leo are actually secondary characters in the book. I thought Finally was a sequel to 11 Birthdays considering the cover but it could be considered a companion book.
I really enjoyed 11 Birthdays and equally enjoyed Finally. Mass’s writing style is light-hearted making Rory’s situations funny and easily identifiable.
My one complaint about the book wasn’t the book at all but instead the cover. The girl on the cover looks much older than 12.
