If I Stay by Gayle Forman
On a snow day, Mia and her family go out to visit some friends. Unfortunately they never make it. Mia doesn’t remember the accident. She finds herself in a hospital bed in a coma. Mia watches her extended family deal with the loss of her family and visit Mia’s comatose body.
I started this book as an audiobook and I was so drawn in during the first half of the first disc that I decided that I didn’t want to read anything else, I just wanted to read and listen to the same book. I picked up the print copy at work and I didn’t want to put this book down. It’s been a long time since I so closely identified with a character in a teen novel. While I didn’t identify with Mia’s situation, I did identify with her as a person. She’s not rebellious or out to change the world, she was just enjoying her life and her time with her family.
A beautifully written book that is heartbreaking and so engaging that I didn’t want to leave Mia in the book when I needed to take a break from reading because I was so afraid something would happen to her when I stopped reading.
