I Am Madame X

I Am Madame X by Gioia Diliberto
22 April, 2005 – I started this book the Monday that I was home sick. It’s a book that I’ve always figured I would read but it just never appealed to me at the times I was looking for a new book to read. This time was different, it seemed to be the most interesting book on the shelf at the time. It’s about the woman who posed for the John Singer Sargent painting that is on the cover, which I guess was scandalous at the time. She is the narrator of the book, which is partly based on letters and notes from people who knew Virginie Gautreau, the model for the painting. It’s a very interesting and entertaining book so far. If you are interested in the woman in the painting or just like historical fiction, I would definitely recommend this book to you.
17 May, 2005 – An interesting read. I enjoyed this book because it gave me some “insight” (as much as you can get from a novel) into the woman in the painting. It was interesting that the scandal regarding the painting was so strong in France but in other parts of the world the painting was well-received.
